The European Commission is organising a conference to analyse and discuss opportunities and challenges for enhancing the contribution of the forest sector to the main EU priorities.
High-level speakers will include Phil Hogan, Commissioner for agriculture and rural development, Arias Cañete, Commissioner for climate action and energy, Ioan Deneş, Romanian Minister for water and forests, and high representatives of the private sector, academia, civil society, and non-governmental organizations.
The conference will start with a high-level political session in the afternoon of 23 May in the Solvay Library in Brussels. Commisioner Karmenau Vella will be joined by other prominent speakers to take stock of progress towards the EU nature and biodiversity objectives and launch the public consultation for the final evaluation of the EU Biodiversity Strategy. The second day, 24 May, we plan a series of technical discussions with stakeholders on the evaluation of the EU biodiversity strategy to 2020, and on potential EU contributions to the post-2020 global diversity framework. This event will take place in the building of the Committee of the regions.
The objective of the workshop is to provide an opportunity for stakeholders to engage in the first EU ecosystem assessment and emerging narratives.
Over the last months, the Platform and its partners started to organise the “European Business and Nature Summit“ which will take place on 7-8 November in Madrid and contribute to enhancing the engagement of governments, businesses and financial institutions in the EU and beyond on biodiversity and natural capital. On 26-27 March, the first foundations for biodiversity measurement approaches were laid down at a Technical Workshop co-hosted by the EU B@B Platform and UNEP-WCMC as a part of the Aligning Biodiversity Measures for Business Initiative. In the coming weeks, you’ll have a chance to provide your ideas on innovative ways to integrate biodiversity into business operations as part of our consultative call linked to Horizon Europe (2021-27).
